Milkbox Parade
03:23
|
|||
I see a white maker
Picking time
I see a white maker
With its hands to the sky
Picking pecans
From whence they fall
I turned to you and said
“You can’t pick them all”
“You can’t pick them all”
On a mountainside
Swallowed by lady luck and time
We stomped our barefoot feet on the ground
While we played our supple minds
We played our supple minds
We danced
To music that we never heard
We danced
To music that we’d always heard
We’d always heard
Now I see white
It’s the milk box parade
I see white and it makes me afraid
Makes me afraid

Black Dog
03:19
|
|||
Black dog on my shoulder running
Down my back
There you are in moonlight looking so intact,
My friend
I just can’t express,
My desire
To hold you in my arms
Again
Buildings fall in time,
Failing every test
Can I show my grit?
Falling like a man
Can I show my grit?
Falling like a man
Black dog on my chest,
Tearing at my flesh
Black dog on my chest,
Tearing at my neck
It gives, it takes,
It’s all forsakenness
But the flowers bloom,
Where the fountain is

The Road to San Elan
06:46
|
|||
I left town for San Elan
On a morning much like this
Take care of things ‘round here son
There’s something that I’ve missed
On the road to San Elan
I met a man in a fez
He was running from the streets and the law
Like a felt-tipped marionette
Hoping I would tumble and dance
On silver streets of twine
Weaved from nothing but happenstance
In these silly dreams of mine
On the wooded road to San Elan
I passed and ass and a plow
But his leader was so fierce and long
That in truth he walked a cow
And he shouted to me
I do this just to get out
If I didn’t have anything else
I’d go crazy
I passed and old man around dusk
Who passed me a yawn
He drank his water from a wooden tusk
Said he’d be there by dawn
As night draped the moon through the world
I spied a scarlet girl
She rode a brown-eyed fawn
With her hair all in curls
And she smiled at me
She didn’t look away
And she said “Maybe
We’ll meet again someday.”
At the gate to San Elan
Monks and fishermen in line
They pulled out their paper deeds
And I tried to pull out mine.
And the guard said to me,
In his bird’s nest hat
If you don’t have paper deeds
I’ll have to turn you back

In Bone
04:40
|
|||
I wandered lonely as a cloud in flight,
Seeking shelter from the dark silk of night
Creaking all the time
The light of the stadium split my eye,
on the clear eve crest of July
The clouds trickled down like gambling dice
And in the car, we laughed until we cried.
It never goes,
It never goes
It never goes away,
It’s here to stay,
It never goes
Never goes away
Between the hands and head
Lies your fiery hair in bed
It belies my structure underneath,
My spine,
Sighs to heave breath through my teeth
When I’ve lost it all
And the worms burn out their glow
Sift through my things when I’m gone
And find what I’ve etched in bone
It never goes,
It never goes
It never goes away,
It’s here to stay,
It never goes
Never goes away

My Lancer
03:50
|
|||
The first coat of winter
the hiding light
The queen makes her entrance
by the fire
In a brocaded palanquin
with auburn-colored eyes
the queen makes here entrance
and sighs
the jester danced a sad waltz
while in the snow the maidens passed
we'll just have to deal with it
I guess
But it's not over so fast
it's not over yet
For the lancer comes with a sword
strapped to his chest
Oh! My Lancer!
My solid golden arm
Oh! My Lancer in the dark!
In spring we sat on toadstools
and watched the days go by
nowadays there's war on people's minds
forget all of your troubles
leave them so far behind
Oh! My Lancer!
How your armor shines

Song For Howard
03:37
|
|||
Rusted kingdoms where you stand
Unspoken histories you could not comprehend
Machines of angels past
Float by like ghosts in the fog
I’ll build a garden so smooth and sweet
With pillared walls rising to meet
You draw water in this town don’t you know?
Like you draw circles in the holes of the earth
Like you draw circles with your sword in the dirt
The water rises with the pink full moon
The water goes back to my golden room
It sinks and it shivers, boy,
The patterns too
Mother weaves on her golden loom.

City Bus Blues
04:20
|
|||
I packed my car
and headed out to see you
Put my cigarettes on the dashboard
and oil in my ear
But the city but was full of people
I didn't know the names of
So I packed my car
and headed off to see you
Is it the burden of the boy
to want his every toy
Is it the burden of the light
to frighten and destroy
Sleep, child
Don't go out in the light
Is it the burden of the mother
To watch her child die
I met you in a café
at night
You were lonely
and looking for a fight
So we tussled in a motel
outside of San Blan
And I told you I'd like to see you
again
